After a big delay due to time zones, we managed to get an interview with a musician who is the one and only member from the band: Saturdays. The interview goes from his role in the band to the story behind both of his songs on the split. As for the band, we just did a review on their split with Decades, which can be read right here.
Me: Hello, please introduce yourself and the role you play in Saturdays?
Syafiq: Hi I'm Ned from Title Fight. [Laughs] Hi I'm Syafiqnur, I play guitar and sing in Saturdays.
M: Could you explain what got you into writing music in the first place?
S: Well, at first it was just purely me playing songs of my favorite bands really, and as I got older, I found myself relating every word of my favorite songs to a specific time in my life and some of the songs actually helped me through some hard times. And since then, I wanted to do that, make people relate to my songs, make them feel like they're are not alone y'know?
[I totally get what he means due to the fact that his song "Grey,'' is a song that really hits home, in my case.]
M: Now, talking about the lyrics. What are the stories behind both of your songs?
S: Well. its mostly about a past relationship with a girl I didn't think I was ever going to be in one, honestly. The things that made you happy at that point of time, but at the same time leave you broken. Its funny, because I mixed it up with about a loss of my grandfather. And losing someone is a hard thing to face and especially when they matter to you, and it doesn't matter if they passed away or you and the other person just went on different ways.
M: Yeah I've been there, but hey, the bright-side is that two genius songs came out. Next question: being a one-man-band, how do you plan on doing shows?
S: Oh thanks! Well as for now, I'm really busy with school and sports so I don't have the time to form a band yet. But in the future, I'll have a couple of friends to session for Saturdays. I miss performing so I hope I can do that soon. And it's really cool to have people looking forward to seeing Saturdays.
M: Cool. I hear you played a show with Title Fight when they played your home town, am I right?
S: Oh nah, I flew to Melbourne, Australia for the Title Fight's Tour. They haven't been here in Singapore; though they say they hope to come soon!
M: Oh! Still, great experience man. So, how would you describe the content in your songs, (talking genre-wise), to new listeners?
S: Yeah, such a great time. Hmm genre wise, I'd say Saturdays is pretty much an alternative band I guess. The split stuff was very pop punk and fast but the new stuff that I'm currently writing for an EP is much mid/slow-tempo kinda like grungey but still keeping it pretty melodic here and there. I wouldn't say people will dig it but a couple of friends told me that it kinda grew on them, so I guess that's pretty cool. But yeah, bummer punk hahah.
M: Bummer punk, that sounds awesome. So okay, let's start to round this up. You just said that you're writing new music, does that mean we'll get to listen to more Saturdays material?
S: Hmm yeah, sure, I'll probably get one of the songs from the EP done to keep people guessing how the new sound is gonna sound like and then release the whole thing hopefully hmm I wanna say this year but I'm scared school might come in the way, but we'll have new materials for sure.
M: That's certainly great to hear. Is there anything you want to add up?
S: Thanks to you guys for the interview. Great job on the site. S/O to stuck in the 90s- Sam Cox/Alistair/Jayb from Sam Records Hobart- Daniel from Columbus- and Anthony. Thank you once again!
